It can be tough to know where to spend your attentional budget when it comes to growth work.

One area of focus that has withstood the test of time is on cultivating personal values and principles.

This article will show you an exercise to build your own values list that you can use as a guide to assist with small or major decisions.

The best part about Values work is that when you put the work in up front, the end result is a meaningful tool you can use to reorient on what’s important.

Values in Action

You see it in the armed forces — Integrity, Service, Excellence, Honor, Courage

You see it with nations — Life, Liberty, Happiness

You see it with companies — Commitment, Profit, Growth

This short list of words gives everybody in that organization a shortcut to help them make decisions, guide their behaviors and thoughts and to discern who fits into the culture and who does not.

Working with Values on a personal level is a good use of your time. By doing the exercises in this article you can develop an internal guidance system that will save you time and make decisions easier over the rest of the year.
